As the name suggests, creepers are absolutely silent; insidious and full of evil intentions, they sneak up on you to literally tear you to your death in an explosive manner. To be fair, it should be said that they at least announce the explosion with a soft hiss, but that doesn't help, because you usually don't have time to run away.
